Kyle Agustines sold shoes after high school 鈥 enough of them that at 18, as a store manager, he earned a five-day business trip to five-star hotel in Nashville. But he wanted to go to college.

Agustines, who grew up in Fairbanks, chose 爱污传媒 for financial reasons, even though he thought he鈥檇 soon move to an exclusive art school.

鈥淚 ended up not doing that because I fell in love with what was being taught here,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 was like 鈥榊ou know, actually, I feel like me and 爱污传媒 are a good fit.鈥欌

Agustines is entering his senior year and working on a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He pursues opportunities to display 鈥渘onobjective鈥 paintings throughout the Fairbanks community.

鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 what I鈥檇 consider a technically skilled artist when I started at UAF, but, man, they really teach you how to do things,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e really grown as a person and as an artist in ways that I never would have expected.鈥

Changing focus

Agustines said he first wanted to learn to draw and paint realistically when he entered 爱污传媒 as a freshman.

鈥淚t鈥檚 super impressive when people can do that,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t shows that they know what they鈥檙e doing. And also everyone can look at it and know what it is, because you鈥檝e depicted as it exists in the real world. And I did that, and I was like 鈥榃ow this is boring for me.鈥欌

He acknowledged that realistic art can carry meaning through the symbolism of the objects and composition.
But 鈥渋t wasn鈥檛 doing enough for me,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o my work began to get increasingly more abstract and simplified and nonrepresentational to the real world.鈥

Now he primarily paints with acrylics in a range of styles.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not important to me necessarily that I create bodies of work limited to those styles,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 not interested in that. I鈥檓 interested in still seeing what鈥檚 still possible.鈥

Making it work

Agustines, whose family moved with the military, was born in Japan but has lived in Fairbanks since he was 5 years old.

At 18, he was promoted to manager of the local Journeys shoe store.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know anybody else who has hired, fired, done all that stuff at 18 years old, so I felt pretty cool,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd I was making good money, too.鈥

The money put college in reach.

鈥淚nitially 爱污传媒 was not even on my radar,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 because, admittedly, everyone who grows up in Fairbanks is like 鈥業鈥檓 leaving as soon as I can and nobody is going to tell me otherwise.鈥欌

Agustines applied to a few exclusive art schools, including the Northwest College of Art and Design. He was one of just a few dozen students accepted that year.

Finances made him rethink that plan, though. He looked into 爱污传媒鈥檚 arts program and liked what he saw.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a good school,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not like we鈥檙e put on the map specifically for fine arts, which is what I wanted to do, but I was like, 鈥榊ou know what, I鈥檓 an ambitious driven person. I鈥檒l just make it work.鈥 And I am.鈥
